Knowledge sources in spoken dialogue systems

چکیده
We describe how the architecture of the modularized linlin dialogue manager can be augmented to handle the cases where the user's initial information request is underspeci ed, and where therefore the system needs to ask the user about the missing pieces of information. In many existing spoken dialogue systems this has been handled by a so-called task model, which has been embedded in the dialogue move management. The present paper makes two points. First, that the term 'task' is ambiguous, since it can refer to the user's underlying reasons for engaging in the dialogue, to the user's information seeking activity, and to the system's actions when preparing for providing the user with an answer to the posed question. Second, we argue that this aspect of dialogue management should be managed by a separate module of the system, both because our previous work has shown that it is not necessary in all cases, and because it is conceptually di erent from general interaction management knowledge. For these reasons we advocate using a separate knowledge module called an Information Speci cation Form for managing these cases.

Rapid Prototyping for Spoken Dialogue Systems
We implemented a spoken dialogue system architecture for rapid prototyping. The features that support rapid prototyping include a clear separation of generic dialogue processing algorithms from domain and language speci c knowledge sources. In an experiment, it could be shown that six individuals could specify these domain and language speci c knowledge sources within 8 to 12 hours to come up w...
متن کاملDIALOGUE SEMANTICS FOR AN ORAL DIALOGUE SYSTEMx{
This paper describes the component in the SUNDIAL spoken dialogue system responsible for semantic interpretation of user input. This component, thèbelief mod-ule', constructs interpretations using several sources of knowledge, including static knowledge deenitions and a dynamic model of dialogue context, and addresses the problem of the hypothetical nature of the recognition and parsing results...

What would you say if your refrigerator told you, " You're having some friends round for hot chocolate later. Maybe you should order two cartons of milk " ? Of course, in Spoken Dialogue Technology, Michael McTear will not give an answer to the question of whether talking to domestic appliances makes sense, but he indicates that even a normal household, for instance, may offer a wide field of a...
متن کاملWIT: A Toolkit for Building Robust and Real-Time Spoken Dialogu Systems
This paper describes WIT, a toolkit for building spoken dialogue systems. WIT features an incremental understanding mechanism that enables robust utterance understanding and realtime responses. WIT’s ability to compile domain-dependent system specifications into internal knowledge sources makes building spoken dialogue systems much easier than it is from scratch.
متن کاملRobust grammatical analysis for spoken dialogue systems
We argue that grammatical analysis is a viable alternative to concept spotting for processing spoken input in a practical spoken dialogue system. We discuss the structure of the grammar, and a model for robust parsing which combines linguistic sources of information and statistical sources of information. We discuss test results suggesting that grammatical processing allows fast and accurate pr...
متن کاملAmbiguity representation and resolution in spoken dialogue systems
Spoken natural language often contains ambiguities that must be addressed by a spoken dialogue system. In this work, we present the internal semantic representation and resolution strategy of a dialogue system designed to understand ambiguous input. These mechanisms are domain independent; task-specific knowledge is represented in parameterizable data structures. Speech input is processed throu...
